Chinese Student Numbers in UK Universities

How many students from China are in each British University?

Chinese Student Numbers in UK Universities

Many students in China who are planning to study in Britain want to know all their options and this includes knowing how many Chinese students are in each university in Britain. So How2UK has contacted the leading British universities and asked them to tell us how many students from China they have for the year 2005/06.

In this, Part 1 of our results, we will tell you which universities have the most students from China. In Part 2 we will reveal which universities have the most postgraduate and undergraduate students from the Mainland. In the final edition, Part 3, we will tell you the numbers of students in each university Business School.

There is no single way to look at these figures. Some people may see a high Chinese population as indicating how popular the university is whilst others will see its as a deterent for their own study.

Part 1: Total numbers of Chinese Students in Leading UK universities

Our results confirm that most universities have relatively small China student populations for undergraduate study but high numbers for postgraduate study. One notable exception to this is Imperial College London.

The table to your right shows, for each university, the total number of Chinese students as well as the percentage of full-time students who are from China.

On average each university has approximately 550 Chinese students and an average of 4.5% of students are from China.

As you can see there are often differences between the universities which have the highest number of Chinese, and the universities with the highest percentage of their population from China.

So whilst Manchester has the most Chinese students (1383) it ranks only 19 out of 41 for the percentage of its students who are from China (4.5%), reflecting the size of this university. Imperial College London has the highest percentage (10.6%) as well as having the second highest overall (1133) – as you will see next week this is due to its surprisingly high numbers of Bachelor degree students from China.

The universities with the most Chinese students are Manchester, Warwick, Imperial, Nottingham, Northumbria. The universities who have the most as a percentage of their overall population are Imperial, Warwick, Essex, York and Bath.

In Part 2 of our survey we report on the number of postgraduate and undergraduate students at each university. Of particular interest is the percentage of postgraduate students who are Chinese - at some universities it is above 20%.

Which universities are included in the survey?

We contacted over 50 UK universities.

The following universities did not respond to our survey: Aberdeen, Exeter, Keele, Liverpool, Oxford, Sussex.

We thank all the universities who responded to our survey and commend them for their openness and student focus.

* all figures for the numbers of Chinese students are supplied by the universities themselves and refer to the year 2005/06

** Percentages are worked out using full-time student populations from the Hesa figures of 2004, it is noted that this will create innacuracies in the figures, howvever such inaccuracies are expected to be small and evenly distributed. Percentages should therefore be taken as approximates and not exact figures.
