Chinese Student Numbers in British Universities Part 1: Total Numbers Chinese Student Numbers in British Universities Part 3: Business School Numbers ### Which universities are included in the survey? We contacted over 50 UK universities. The following universities did not respond to our survey: Aberdeen, Exeter, Keele, Liverpool, Oxford, Sussex. We thank all the universities who responded to our survey and commend them for their openness and student focus. * all figures for the numbers of Chinese students are supplied by the universities themselves and refer to the year 2005/06 ** Percentages are worked out using full-time student populations from the Hesa figures of 2004, it is noted that this will create innacuracies in the figures, howvever such inaccuracies are expected to be small and evenly distributed. Percentages should therefore be taken as approximates and not exact figures. |

Chinese student numbers in UK universities?
The Numbers of Undergraduate & Postgraduate Students from Mainland China
The survey shows that Imperial College, London has the highest number of undergraduate Chinese students (758) of all the UK universities that joined our survey. Manchester, Northumbria and Nottingham are the only other universities to have over 500 undergraduate students from China. In terms of percentage (%) of the total student population (including British students), nearly all universities have relatively small Chinese, undergraduate populations of 5% or less. The 2 notable exceptions are Imperial College (10.2%) and Essex University (7%).
At postgraduate level, the numbers (and %) of Chinese students are much higher, reflecting the relatively low numbers of British students continuing in to the highest level of education. Interestingly Imperial College has comparatively few Chinese students at this level (ranking 13th out of 42 in our survey). Manchester, which has a high Chinese undergraduate population, also has the highest postgraduate population of 639 Chinese students, with Loughborough (577) and Birmingham making up the top 3.
The most startling findings are the very high % of postgraduate students from China at certain universities. The highest is Stirling University is Scotland, with 21.5%; meaning 1 in 5 postgraduate students at the university are from China. Stirling also has the largest imbalance between undergraduate and postgraduate Chinese populations, as there are only 26 bachelor degree students from China despite the relatively large number of postgraduate Chinese at the university .
However most of the British universities have a much smaller % of Chinese students at postgraduate level, typically around 9-10% of all nationalities.
At the other end of the scale, the universities with the least Chinese students at postgraduate level are: KCL, SOAS, Edinburgh, Queen's Belfast and UCL. The results for the 3 London universities are to be expected, reflecting their very high entry standards and their specialised nature. However, the low number at Edinburgh University is surprising given the university's relative popularity in China.
The table below shows the numbers of Chinese students at each UK university. % figures show the percentage of the total student population from Mainland China. Figures come directly from each university for the year 2006 and percentages (which are only approximates) are calculated using the latest available HESA figures for total student populations.
