Chinese Student Numbers in British Universities Part 1: Total Numbers Chinese Student Numbers in British Universities Part 2: Undergraduate & Postgraduate Numbers ### Which universities are included in the survey? We contacted over 50 UK universities. The following universities did not respond to our survey: Aberdeen, Exeter, Keele, Liverpool, Oxford, Sussex. We thank all the universities who responded to our survey and commend them for their openness and student focus. * all figures for the numbers of Chinese students are supplied by the universities themselves and refer to the year 2005/06 ** Percentages are worked out using full-time student populations from the Hesa figures of 2004, it is noted that this will create innacuracies in the figures, howvever such inaccuracies are expected to be small and evenly distributed. Percentages should therefore be taken as approximates and not exact figures. |

Chinese student numbers in UK's Universities
Numbers of Students from Mainland China in the UK's Business Schools
The business school at Northumbria University has by far the most Chinese students of any of the UK universities in this survey. With 645 Chinese students, it has more than twice as many Chinese students as most other UK Business schools. Interestingly it has more Chinese students at undergraduate level than at postgraduate, which is highly unusual for a UK university.
Lancaster, Surrey, Nottingham, Cardiff and Durham are the only other Business schools with more than 300 students from China. Lancaster stands out as it is one of the countries top rated (5*) business schools. At the other end of the scale, Bristol, Sheffield, Queen Mary, KCL, SOAS and Cambridge all have 100 or less Chinese students in their Business departments. Not only are these institutions all very prestigious but also they have a fairly limited number of business courses and this explains their low numbers of Chinese students. Surprisingly Cambridge reported just one student from Mainland China in its Business School.
Northumbria and Lancaster stand out as having by far the most undergraduate Chinese in their Business department whilst Bradford, Nottingham, Essex, Newcastle, and Royal Holloway also have high numbers of Chinese on Business bachelor degree programmes.
At postgraduate level, again Northumbria tops the list with Surrey, Cardiff and Durham being the other Business departments to have more than 200 postgraduate students from China.
The table below shows how many Chinese students are in the Business Schools of the British universities surveyed. How2UK contacted all the leading UK universities (Times Top 50) to request the statistics on the numbers of Chinese nationals at their university and in their Business School. Universities that did not respond are listed below, whilst certain universities were unable to provide us with complete statistics and in such cases entries are marked n/a (figures not available).
