Art and Design is a large area that comprises:

- Fine Art
- Film, Photography & Animation
- Jewellery Design
- Teaching
- History of Art & Design
- Fashion, Clothing & Textiles
- Theatre
- Graphic Design
- Art & Design Administration & Management.

It is a really exciting field with great career opportunities for people with talent.

Most postgraduate courses look for students with a first degree in Art & Design, although it is often possible to switch disciplines (e.g. if your first degree was Design and you decide to switch to Fashion for your Masters). If you do not have a A&D Bachelors degree but feel you have an natural talent for the subject you can also apply if you can provide samples of your ability (e.g. a portfolio of your Photographs). There are also courses that are open to graduates new to the subject and they can found on our course search database.

When making an application you will be asked to submit a portfolio. A portfolio is a sample of your work (drawings, design, photographs etc.). This can be in paper or CD format.

For undergraduate applicants, you must of course apply through UCAS. For international students the application deadline is June 30 (the earlier deadlines of Jan and March that you may see, are for UK students). Even at undergraduate level you will specialise in one of the above fields (so you must decide which area you like). Just like postgrdaute level you will need to submit some examples of your artistic ability when you apply (such as photographs, drawings, paintings, designs etc.)

Art & Design is a highly specialised subject and study of this subject offers entry to a highly exciting industry. Job prospects are good if you do genuinely have talent in the field. A&D is an area where most people do feel the need to get a Masters degree at some stage in their career as it allows to specialise in one of the above areas (it is rare for a person to try in operate in more than one field, so you need to decide which area is best to you.

A&D graduates can enter the following fields:

- Advertising
- Architecture
- Art & Antiques Market
- Crafts
- Design
- Fashion, Clothing & Textiles
- Graphic Design
- History of A&D
- Teaching
- Theatre

Many of these fields offer exciting growth opportunities, as they are new to China, it is quite realistic to enter these fields in a self-employed capacity or through many companies of all sizes (e.g. retail companies, advertising agencies, design companies, interior design etc.).
