King’s is nearing the end of a £400m makeover of its central London campuses, which will leave it with some of the most modern facilities in Europe. Applications are rising, too: up 10% in 2004 and about 13% this year, making it one of the toughest colleges to get into. With UCL, King’s was one of the founding partners of the University of London. Heavy recent investment in King’s’ South Bank estate has seen the opening of a new medical and dental school at Guy’s hospital. The school is one of the largest in Europe, with more than 2,000 undergraduates. Allied with the 3,000 nursing and midwifery undergrads, medics account for more than a quarter of the college’s students. The latest focus of the makeover team is the college’s Strand headquarters, the grade I-listed buildings that are home to law, humanities, physical sciences and engineering students, and some of the social science and public policy departments. By next September all work will be completed, with new lecture theatres and teaching space. With shared college rooms starting at a low £53 a week (or £70 for a small single), King’s has done much to offset the costs of studying in the capital.
