Having been at the forefront of widening access to university, UClan is not about to put students off with higher tuition fees. There are plans for 100 “Excellence Scholarships” of a £2,000 one-off payment in shortage subject areas. The university is investing in one of those areas. The new science-focused Darwin Building opens this autumn and at the same time a new health and business building will come on stream. A £12m performing arts building is due for completion in 2007. This is already one of the biggest universities in the UK, with more than 15,000 full-time and 10,000 part-time undergraduates — but it wants to get bigger still. The main campus is in Preston, with sizeable satellites in Penrith and Carlisle, plus more than 20 partner colleges. Graduate unemployment is low, and student satisfaction pretty high at just under 70%. Britain’s newest city is a cheap place to live and learn. Student accommodation is the lowest anywhere.

More about the university
The University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) main campus is in Preston, north-west England. Preston is England’s newest city, has a multicultural population and is a hub of national and international road, rail and air links. The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is only a short distance from the bigger cities of Manchester and Liverpool and the stunning Lake District national park.

Academic strengths
The University offers a wide range of subjects with nearly 600 undergraduate courses on offer, over 180 taught postgraduate programmes and a range of research specialisms including astrophysics, fire and explosion studies, health and forensic and investigative science.

Facilities
During the last 10 years the University has invested more than £77 million to provide a modern living and learning environment for its students. Teaching buildings are a mixture of traditional and modern. The Library Learning and Resource Service (LLRS) is a modern, four-storey building. Computer terminals are available here and in several buildings across campus. Students have free internet access, email address and personal area on our computer network. During term time, computing resources are available seven days a week, 18 hours a day. Other facilities include an indoor sports centre, a new £12 million outdoor Sports Arena and a Health Centre.

Student life
There are more than 60 societies and sports clubs to join including the International Society which organises events and sight-seeing trips. The University regularly hosts music, theatre and art exhibitions. Entertainment in Preston includes playing or watching sport, theatres, cinemas, museums and eating out. It’s also great for shopping.

Government inspectors have praised UCLan’s Student Support Services as amongst the best in the UK. As well as an academic tutor who will advise you about your coursework, you can get help from specially trained advisers on personal and financial matters and careers. We have an International Students’ Advice Team, which offers information, support and guidance. There is also an international students’ orientation week before the start of term. Free English language support is available throughout your course.
