Government & Other Scholarships for Students from China

There are some large UK scholarships for Chinese students offered by non-university organizations. They are mostly offered by the British government. There are awards for Chinese students only and awards for International Students that Chinese students can apply to. These scholarships are extremely competitive and you will need to be an excellent student to stand a chance.

Chevening: Minimum IELTS of 6.5 with no individual mark less than 6.0.
Applicants must posses the following Chevening qualities; ambition and drive, leadership potential, an innovative and creative disposition and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances in both professional and cultural terms.

  1. 3-5 years relevant work experience
  2.  Potential applicants are expected to have managerial, policy-influencing or decision-making responsibilities in an organisation.
  3. The scholarship is open to all applicants from government, private business, media, NGOs or other organisations.
  4. The deadline for applications is September each year. Oct-Nov: interviews of candidates. Dec: results announced. Jan-Apr: make your applications to universities. Note you apply for the scholarship before you apply to the universities.
  5. Type A scholarships – these cover tuition fees only. Type B scholarships – these are full scholarships that cover tuition fees, monthly stipend and various one-off allowances.
  6. Type C scholarships – these vary from award to award and cover part/full stipend and/or allowances.
  7. One in 25 applicants are successful (+200 from in China)
  8. For Masters degrees only and for any subject

The Scotland Scholarship: for graduates in science, engineering or creative arts with 3 years work experience. Must plan to study a postgraduate degree in science, engineering or creative arts in Scotland. Application deadline: March. Interviews: (in China) in April. Must have offer letters from universities before application.

ORS: For postgraduate research students only. Not a full scholarship, you only pay the home students rate. You must apply through the individual UK university.

Ford Foundation: As this is a Charity you must make a commitment to working and helping with poorer communities in China upon your return and your work experience and degree must be in this field.

  1. Currently resident in China. Deadline: March
  2. Has a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Chinese university
  3. Has at least three years of work experience as of the application deadline date
  4. Whose Residence permit, current employer, and current residence are each in areas other than the following   major cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao
  5. Not currently enrolled in any Master’s or Doctoral degree program
  6. Not already the recipient of any higher degree from an institution outside of China
  7. Not already the recipient of a doctoral degree from any institution

Royal Society Research Fellowships: The Royal Society offers a choice of research opportunities from postdoctoral level only.
