Here are Laura's top tips:
- About half of the scholarships will consider all people for a scholarship when you apply for the course. In this case you will be asked on the university application form if you wish to be considered for any scholarships. Many students answer NO to this question because they believe it will improve their chances of getting an offer from the university. This is not true. All the universities we contacted told us that it will make no difference to your application.
- Although you need to have excellent grades to get the scholarship, you should realise that there will be probably be other applicants (maybe from other countries) who have grades just as good as yours. Therefore there are other things you can do in your application to improve your chances. These include:
1. Proof that it is difficult for you to pay the fees without some help
2. Evidence of some work experience (full or part time) in the field of you study
3. Evidence you are a unusually motivated person (including voluntary work/charity work, unusual travel experiences)
4. Impressive skills, such as fluency in a third language
5. Evidence you are a very focused student who knows what they will do after they graduate and how their study will help them do this (this means you should have a very clear career plan you need to suggest to the university that you will be a very successful alumni.
- For Masters degree study; large scholarships (from 50% tuition fees to full fees + living expenses) are usually only for advanced courses. If you are changing your major (conversion courses) most scholarships will be small (10-50% tuition fees), unless you have work experience.
