The British Pre-University School system is 13 years whereas in China it is 12 years therefore you have to study for one extra year after High School before you can begin an Undergraduate degree in the UK. There are 2 ways you can do this:
1. Study for one year at a university in China. Good grades (80%) from most Chinese universities will see you admitted in to a top-20 UK University (for any subject, even Business). Your major for the UK can be totally different to you present major in China.
2. Study for one year (sometimes 8 months) on a UK University Foundation Programme. This can be done in the UK or China (obviously China will be cheaper). Most courses begin in September but a few begin in January (so the course is only 8 months). These courses are offered by universities and colleges. Usually the courses are offered by one university (or by a college on behalf of one university) but you can apply to other universities for your Bachelor degree if you wish.
Study in a university is more prestigious and will make it easier for you to enter that university (or to transfer to another university) for your Bachelor degree. However study in a college is usually cheaper, there are more that begin in January, and the IELTS requirement is cheaper (Most need IELTS 4.5 but universities look for 5.5 (some accept 5.0). Also some colleges will accept students who have only completed Gao Er (for all university Foundation programmes you must have completed Gao San). Note: if you want to do this you will most likely only be able to study your Bachelor degree at the university who sponsor the college’s programme and you will not be able to go to a very prestigious university.
Tuition Fees: 4,500-8,000 GBP IELTS: 4.5-5.5
Start Date: Sept & Jan
You usually apply direct to the university for the Foundation programme and you should receive the offer letter quite quickly (1 month). It is generally easy to be accepted – you just need to submit your High School grades + a reference from your teacher.
When you are ready to apply for your undergraduate degree you must apply through UCAS (Universities Central Admissions Service). You can study any major you want to. Most universities offer all the subjects. However, there are certain degrees, which are so popular amongst good British students, that universities usually only accept students who have taken the British High School Leavers exam (known as the A-Levels). These majors are: Architecture and Medicine. Law degrees at the top universities can also be difficult without having taken the A-Levels. All other majors, including, Business, IT & Economics are very simple to be admitted to. You can apply online through the official central applications systems known as UCAS (www.ucas.com). Simply complete the application form and pay the fee (15GBP).
