The Accounting and Finance Group at the University of Birmingham pioneered accounting education in the UK
This tradition has continued, and many of today's academic members of staff are recognised as international authorities in their fields.

This programme, which we have been offering since the 1960s, has developed to reflect our wide interests. It encompasses accounting in its international, public and private contexts, corporate financial management, private sector investment and foreign exchange markets.

The programme aims to give you a deep knowledge of the theoretical and empirical literature that provides the background to understanding changes and innovations in accounting and finance. You also learn a range of techniques that can be used to solve real-life problems.

You take six modules, including compulsory ones on Graduate Accounting Theory and Theory of Financial Management. You can also choose from a wide range of options and submit a dissertation on a topic of your choice.

Career opportunities
Today's career opportunities have moved well beyond the traditional spheres of accounting, taxation, auditing and banking. They include such diverse possibilities as investment analysis, management consultancy, risk management, corporate governance, strategic financial management, and public sector finance. Every conceivable type of organisation can benefit from the skills of accounting and finance specialists. Traditional employers, such as accountancy practices, manufacturers, retailers and financial institutions, have been supplemented by many types of service and non-profit organisations. These include hospitals, local authorities, charities and education.

Detailed Entry Requirements
For entrance to our taught programmes we require at least an upper second-class degree or postgraduate diploma in a relevant subject from a UK university or equivalent. We also accept professional qualifications such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA, AIB, ACII if they have been obtained by examination.
