A degree in Accounting and/or Finance can lead to some of the most attractive jobs in modern China. For Accountancy there is a separate professional qualification that you must complete to become a fully qualified accountant (the most common being ACCA – you can take this in China or overseas). For a career in Finance there is no such professional requirement. Fully qualified Accountants are highly sought after in all international companies and promotion can lead to the position of Finance Director and even beyond (Finance Directors are often considered for the Chief Operating and Chief Executive Officer posts). Private Practice is also an attractive option for many Accountants who prefer to be self-employed and to service small to medium sized enterprises.
For Finance or Accounting graduates (with or without professional qualification) the following careers are most popular:
- Investment Banker
- Trader (equities, bonds etc.)
- Actuary ( consultancy or insurance)
- Bank Manager
- Credit Analyst
- Management Consultant (independent)
These jobs will often not be a graduate’s first position but they are realistic paths.
Most universities offer Accounting/Finance. Some are advanced courses, for students who have studied the subject before (or a similar one, e.g. Economics, Mathematics or perhaps very mathematical science/engineering degree). There are also many courses that are conversion courses and are therefore open to graduates of any first-degree subject. In this case when making your application it is important you demonstrate in your application your Mathematical ability. If you have taken some courses in your first degree that involved Maths (and got good grades) highlight this. If not then mention your High School Maths performance.
