Education 教育学

At postgraduate level the major education certificate is not open to International Students. It is called the PGCE and prepares British Bachelor degree students to become teachers. The most common Masters course in Education for International students is the MA Education. It is a comprehensive general education course. Some universities require a teaching degree + work experience but others offer the course to graduates of any discipline and without work experience. This course is not a professional teaching qualification but it does: (1) make you a better teacher (2) improve your career prospects (3) open a career in the private education industry.

A Masters in Education is increasingly popular for students planning to run/manage a training centre. It can also open paths in to HRM and professional training for commercial organisations.

English / Writing / Linguistics / Translation

There are 2 kinds of English courses: pure ones about the language & literature; and applied courses regarding teaching, translation and creative writing. The first kind is not very suitable for non-native speakers. The second kind is increasingly popular. Most universities offer these courses. About half look for a first degree in a language, the other half are open to graduates of any discipline. Obviously you will need an above average level of English (usually IELTS 7.0, but some accept 6.5).The most popular courses are TESOL (teaching English as a second language), Creative Writing and Translation. For the Creative Writing option you will usually be required to submit a piece of your written work to show your ability.

Future careers include:

- English Teacher
- Translator
- Journalist
- Manager of training school

Translators are particularly in demand and they can command very high salaries in China these days.
