Law 法学

A Masters degree is not a professional qualification. To become a fully qualified Lawyer you need a first degree in Law (or a first degree in any subject + a 1-year Law Diploma (CPE)) followed by a period of internship and professional examinations. These post graduation professional exams are country specific; therefore the UK qualifications are different to the French, American or Chinese ones.

While it is possible and popular for Chinese students to take a Law degree in the UK, it is not normally possible for Chinese students to do their professional examinations in the UK. However returning to China with a just Law degree from the UK still has many advantages for Chinese students and careers prospects are good.

Law Masters courses are nearly all advanced ones (there are one or two I-year conversion courses). But if you do not have a Law degree you can take a 1-year conversion Diploma and you then become qualified for the 1-year Law Masters (so 2 years in all).

Nearly all universities have Law departments. Britain is the home of much of the world’s legal frameworks. The British legal system is the foundation of much of the corporate world’s laws as well as the laws of many countries including North America, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Hong Kong and many African countries. Therefore a British Law degree is highly sought after, especially by Foreign Law firms in China or Multinational companies with their own in-house legal team. The Masters degree in Law is referred to as LLM.

There are many specialisations and you should choose according to your career plans. The most suitable LLM’s for Chinese students are:

- Commercial & Corporate Law
- Finance Law
- Competition Law
- International Business Law
- Intellectual Property Law - Computer & Communications Law
- Economic & Finance Law
- Maritime Law
