Hi

You may know this is the %'s for the UK system

1st: 70-80%
2:1: 60-70%
2:2: 50-60%
3rd: 40-50%

It is known that the marking system in India is tougher and most UK universities see 60% from an Indian University as being equal to a first (1st)

student

Bill    2009/3/19 16:21

Here is what Strathclyde say:

For entry to Strathclyde postgraduate programmes we would look for a minimum of 60% in an undergraduate degree from a recognised Indian institution. Although 60% is a general entry requirement we understand that the marking system in some of the state and national universities make it harder to achieve 60%, therefore we will accept 55% from University of Mumbai, University of Calcutta, University of Delhi etc. Graduates from the IITs and IIMs will also be considered with marks in the region of 55%.

thanks bill and cozzie.... appreciate it....

i got an offer letter from strathclyde and my average for the two yrs is at 68%.i still have to give my 3rd yr exmz.. so do you think it is advisable to go ahead with the reservation/addmission??

student

Bill    2009/3/19 17:42

what does your offer letter say? what grade does it say you need to get?

student

vk_sekhar    2009/3/19 18:10

there r three conditions :-
-- IELTS score of 6.5
-- evidence of cmpletion of degree to 1st class/2:1 standard
-- copy of final degree certificate and transcripts.

student

Bill    2009/3/23 15:29

Absolutely! As long as you don't fall asleep during your final exams you are in, so go ahead and confirm you place

student

vk_sekhar    2009/3/24 19:58

hi, i guess i will confirm it. wow...

thank you for your kindness. i appreciate it.

mochari    2009/4/24 15:10

hi, i am pursuing my B.A. political science(hons) from Delhi University,India. As it is very difficult to get above 60% in pol science hons in DU can anyone plz tell what is the minimum requirement for masters in international relations in universities such as king's,warwick, leeds and others??

student

Bill    2009/4/25 9:25

58% should do it but if you have over 55% it is still worth applying

student

mochari    2009/5/4 22:14

well my first year result was just 50%(well i know not that impressive). i just gave my 2nd year final exam and the results are gonna be out by july end. i would be completing my graduation by april next year but the results won't be out by atleast end of july 2010. when do you think would be the ideal time to start off with the application process, finances and visa requirements?

student

Bill    2009/5/6 17:00

Leeds could be possibly, King's and Warwick is probably pushing it

student

mochari    2009/5/7 2:21

well i am quite confident that the average of my 1st,2nd and 3rd year results would be above 55%even though my 1st year result wasn't good enough.i hope to recover by doing my best in 2nd and 3rd year.

student

diabolicalzz    2009/5/17 10:41

hey guys..i got an offer letter from warwick..stating that y only condition is an indian equivalent of a uk 2:2.well im from the university of bombay which is a central university.so i would like to know how much percentage is this exactly 55 58 or 60?

student

mochari    2009/5/17 23:36

Hey dude, Dev here from Delhi University.Congrats on your offer from Warwick.According to the British system 2:1 is anything between 60% and 70% and 2:2 is between 50% and 60%.

student

Bill    2009/5/19 11:58

Hi mocahari you are right but those are the % equivalents for people who have studied in a UK university. So if you get between 60 and 70% in a British university it is called a 2.1. But British universities do not consider the % scores from other countries to be the same. For example a score of over 80% from a Chinese university is needed to be considered the same as a 2.1. Whilst in Indian Universities it is much lower, a score of 58% is reckoned to be a 2.1.

Its all to do with how strict the marking systems are in each country. So we can say marking is stricter in India but less strict in China. It would be unfair if British universities asked Chinese students to only get over 60% in the undergraduate degree as in China this is an easy score to obtain.

To complicate things further UK universities know that especially in large countries such as India and China the strictness of the marking can vary between universities and that the less famous universities often award high grades more easily. For that reason UK universities often say that the score must come from a Central University for India or in the case of China which is the my area of expertise they will ask for the score to be from a 211 University which is a list of the best universities compiled by the Chinese ministry of education.

Hope that helps!

student

diabolicalzz    2009/5/19 16:29

hey mochari thanks a ton for ure help..but i would jus like to confirm one last time 50 - 58% is a uk 2:2 and above that till 70% is a uk 2:1 right???

student

mochari    2009/5/19 16:56

See this is the British System
1st: 70-80%
2:1: 60-70%
2:2: 50-60%
3rd: 40-50%
However, even if an Indian student gets 58% than it is regarded as 2:1 degree because our marking system is very tough and the British Universities acknowledge that. Morever it also depends on the course. Entry to some courses are tough and to some not that much.If you dont mind sharing, which course did you apply and how much was your %?

student

diabolicalzz    2009/5/19 16:57

well i applied for i.a.m.b.e.c course in warwick..i havent got my marks yet i gave it this year

student

mochari    2009/5/19 17:45

What were your average for the 1st and 2nd year?

student

Princess    2009/6/3 17:26

just out of curiosity.. how come all of u seem to leave out 80-100%. is it because no one ever gets, or its anyway a 1st class or is there a super category?

student

Cozzie    2009/6/4 20:21

Hi princess, yes even a score above 80% would still be a first but its also true that scores that high are just not awarded in the UK. A score of 90 or a 100% would be like saying the student knew everything about the subject and I don't think a UK Professor would be willing to do that.

student

mochari    2009/6/15 19:42

Hey angie, even i have the same query as u do. I wanna do my MA in International Relations from any one of the top universities there in UK which has a good program in International Relations.Like u even i am not sure whats the required percentage to get admission in UK universites. They ask for a standard 2:1 degree equivalent to 60% for the application to be considered. But as u know the marking system of Indian Central Universities are very tough and getting a 60% is not a cakewalk.

student

mochari    2009/6/15 19:48

Dear, Bill and Cozzie, if one has a 2:1 degree(60%-70%) and the required IELTS or TOEFL score, does it ensure an admission in University of London in schools such as LSE,King's and SOAS?

student

Bill    2009/6/18 15:12

Its not guaranteed and the prestige of your undergraduate university in your own country will also be important (as is your application personal statement/references). You will stand a good chance however. Admission in to UoL varies a lot between institutions, for example getting in to SOAS is generally easier than LSE.

student

anju    2009/6/24 19:52

hey mochari...first of all let me tell u i got 70.28% in final year but damn my graduation aggregate comes to 53%....i knw its a big difference but as u knw 1st and 2nd is handle by colleges and u knw they dnt grant marks in anycase..infact i happened to be in such degree college where bringing 60% is possible by the 1st rank holder...so college dont gives marks which ruin our career like this......if i can score good in my final year why cant i do in 1st and 2nd year but tats our badluck its handle by college who dnt allot marks where they have to give 5 marks they will give 3 marks and when asked ? to them they give lot of reasons.........i dnt knw whether i am eligible for any msc.in uk or not i think universities got give lot importance to final year marks becz tast wat where we get our hard work fruits.....though i have 62% in my 10th and 71.67% 12th now Tybcom final marks is 70% people can make difference in tat and it proofs i am not dumb if i was like tat i would have not scored good % but 1st and 2nd is wat ruined my career by our great teachers who don't allot marks.u wont believe the 2nd year my friend she scored 65% in fact she is a school scholar and now this year she scored 86% in universities now u can make a difference she is studious person not like uss....

student

mochari    2009/6/26 18:21

Dear Bill, does a masters degree in International Relations from any good UK university guarantee a good placement in the job market? On doing my research i have come acorss the fact that many of the International Relations program like that in LSE only provide theoritical knowledge and there is no sure guarantee of getting a job of one's desire unlike US universities which provide a practical knowledge which allows the students to get a job right out of the course.

Thanks....

student

Hi oyedai

I just want to let you know that you are more likely to get an answer if you start your own question rather than adding it on to an old one. In your case its best to put the question in the Biology & Life Sciences section. Good luck I hope you get some great replies!

student

Princess    2009/10/23 18:53

Hi,
yes, you may get a better reply if you post under the relvnt subject.
I don't know much about Bioinfo but check the following site for biomedical eng

Good Luck
