marvenchen 2007/9/25 16:56I want to ask about Accouting & Finance, which universities are suitable for me?
My statement: Fresh graduate(Bachelor) and major is Business English. Average score: +85%, IELTS 6.5, but writing is only 5, so I plan to re-take it next month. |

Cozzie 2007/9/27 17:19Hi Marven
Because your Bachelor degree is Business English, many accounting & finance degrees are not suitable for you as they are for graduates who have studied the subject before. To find the Accounting/Finance Masters degrees which you can study use the Course Search on the homepage and enter your Bachelor degree as 'Business' How's the ranking of your present university? |
|
lovedonkey 2007/9/28 16:35Finance is difficult to study. If you are not interested in it, you'd better not choose it.

marvenchen 2007/9/29 0:09Hi Cozzie, thank you for your suggestion.
My present university does not belong to 211, but it ranks within 100 from 70 to 80. These days I have searched the universities with my Bachelor Degree as "Language". Do you think it reasonable? I only studied several business courses in my college life, is it ok for me to search the universities with my Bachelor Degree as "Business"? Thank you. |
|
Cozzie 2007/10/1 17:25Hi Marven
You are right, if you only have studied a few Business courses then yes, you should search as a "Language" graduate But there are still plenty of courses open to you. I think you can apply for any university you like, I think most will give you an offer with your very good background. Good Luck ![]() |

Cozzie 2007/10/12 15:50Hi again Marven
Looks like a very good list of universities ![]() What are the courses you are applying for at each university called? |
|
marvenchen 2007/10/12 23:08Hi Cozzie ,
Followings are the courses I have decided to apply for at each uni. Durham: MA Financial Management UEA: MA Finance & Economy York: MSc/MA Management & Business Finance Sheffield: MA Money, Banking & Finance Loughborough: MSc Finance & Management St Andrews: MLitt Finance in Management Nottingham: MA Finance & Investment Birmingham: MSc Investments Newcastle: MA International Financial Analysis Royal Holloway: MSc International Accounting Aberdeen: MSc Finance & Investment Managememt Leicester: MSc Finance What are your recommendations, do you think it possible and it reasonable for me to apply for all of the unis or just a few of them? Thank you. |
|
Cozzie 2007/10/17 17:04Hi Marven
That looks like a good list, there are some great courses there. I am not sure that you have the right background for all of them (York, Nottingham, Sheffield etc.). But I do think most universities will accept you according to your performance and IELTS score. Universities love it if they get applications at this time of year that include the required IELTS score (I know you're writing is a liitle low but this won't worry them too much!). For all those universities that accept a 'Language' major I think your scores are good enough to be accepted. Maybe the toughest is Birmingham because they also consider how good your university in China is (usually needs to a member of the 211 project). As for applying to so many universities, that's up to you. If you are happy to do this then its fine but it might be easier to manage a smaller group of applications. Good luck and write back when you have some news from the universities to let us know how you get on ![]() |

Cozzie 2007/12/3 9:28Hi marven
Sorry I did not reply sooner, I did not see your post After you've sent your applications all you can do is wait. If you've not taken your IELTS exam yet or plan to take it again, then of course you should prepare for this. As for scholarships, it depends on which scholarships you are applying for. For course scholarships you need to check out each university website to find when you are supposed to apply because it varies from course to course |

marvenchen 2007/12/19 20:58Hey, Cozzie:

These offers are from: Royal Holloway, University of London MSc International Accounting University of York MSc Management University of Aberdeen Finance & Investment Management The University of East Anglia MSc International Accounting & Financial Management University of Leicester MSc in Finance Some unis need my IELTS 6.5 with writing 7, some didnt mention the detailed conditions. |
Monica 2007/12/20 10:07RH is better, and the others are not so famous for the major and university.
|
|
marvenchen 2007/12/20 11:47 Thanks, MonicaCould you please give me more details? So that I can make a compare. If anybody knows about these universities and majors, please give some advice. Thanks for all. |
|
Cozzie 2007/12/20 16:54Hi Marven
Congratulations that's a great list! Royal Holloway is good but the question is, do you want to become an Accountant? If not you shouldn't choose this course. Apart from this I would suggest York or Leicester - York because it is a top 10 university and Leicester because it is good in finance and finance is a good subject in terms of future career |
|
zheyuan 2007/12/21 0:02Sorry, I see that marverchen also choose A&F, so may I ask that anybody knows about diploma course of Accouting & Finance at LSE? What's the possiblity to be accepted by its master after taking the diploma? Do I need some extra exams? Because my undergraduate major is not A&F, so does it deserve to study? Thanks for all.

marvenchen 2008/3/11 0:09Hey Cozzie:
How are these days? So far I have received the news from all the universities I applied for. However, I have not yet made a decision for some emergency happened to me those days. Now, I would like to get some suggestions from you. Unconditional offers are from following universities: Loughborough University MSc Finance and Management University of Stirling Investment Analysis University of Leicester MSc in Finance Newcastle University International Financial Analysis MA And conditional offers are: Royal Holloway, University of London MSc in International Accounting University of Aberdeen Finance & Investment Management The University of East Anglia MSc International Accounting & Financial Management University of St. Andrews MLitt in Finance and Management I range these universities and majors in the following oder: Royal Holloway, University of London Newcastle University University of Leicester The University of East Anglia And I would like not to consider others at all. What are your recommedation for my opinion? Also, one of my teachers suggested me University of St. Andrews. What do you think of it? Besides, I wonder that whether the accounting course in Royal Holloway is accepted by ACCA? Comparatively speaking, which is better, Newcastle or Royal? Thank you very much. Look forward to receiving your early reply. |
|
Cozzie 2008/3/16 10:29Hi Marven
Congratulations, that's great! My personal preference is for Newcastle I think but Royal Holloway is also good - i'll write again soon with some details |
|
Cozzie 2008/3/18 16:52I've just re-read the entire post and sorry to zheyuan and pri for not answering your questions
Zheyuan: yes, LSE's diploma in Accounting & Finance is suitable, its great for anyone who has not studied the subject before but wants to enter the finance industry at a high level. It will give you a great advantage to be accepted on to the MSc course and so for anyone who can afford this 2 year option I would really recommend it. However, it is still very difficult to be accepted you will still need to have a very good academic perormance in your bachelor degree to be accepted. If you do apply try to point out that you are good in Maths (even if the last time you studied Maths was at High School). Pri: So of course LSE can't be beat in this field, Oxford, Cambridge as well - graduate from any of these 3 universities and you will get a great IB job in London, no problem But the question is can you be accepted? Can you tell us your academic background? |

Cozzie 2008/3/30 18:39Hi Marven
Sorry, it seems the site has not been working properly over the past few days. So Newcastle and Royal Holloway would both be great. I go for Newcastle for a few reasons: - it does have a very good reputation in finance (its within the business school, which doesn't get a high rating but the finance department is considered one of the best). - It is in general a prestigious university in Britain and quite famous overseas, so it should look good on your resume - students who study in Newcastle seem to love the city. The university is in the middle of the city and it is quite a compact city which has lots of excitement but is also small enough to be very 'liveable'. - the course has accreditation and exemtions from ACCA ![]() |

You can still change to Newcastle but you cannot get your deposit back You should email UEA to tell them you will not come as a courtesy (once you have confirmed your place at Newcastle) |
