Best UK universities for Marketing degrees? English Chinese

(1) 2 3 »

student

timo    2008/2/9 15:02

I thought I would make this post. There are some subjects that it is easy to judge which are the best universities. Majors such as MBA, can be easily judged and so can general subjects such as Accounting, Geography, Biology. But often there are no rankings for very specific courses especially within the Business field.

So here, in no particular order are the universites that are generally considered to have the best Marketing degrees. Its not scientific, just comes from years of my own personal experience:

Birmingham
Warwick
Nottingham
Bath
Manchester
Cardiff
Lancaster
Aston
Strathclyde
University of West Of England
London School of Marketing

Top Courses

Physics

Medical Engineering

Veterinary Biosciences

Law

Politics

Theatre Studies

Great Timo! Very useful

There're many Chinese students in Birmingham University, so it's said that you can only use Chinese there. Its MSc Marketing is for students without business background.

student

zgl_85    2008/5/26 18:15

There're lots of Chinese students studying Business, not only in Birmingham ;)

student

Wood    2008/5/27 12:19

There're few Chinese students in Nottingham Trent. Maybe it's because it's not so famous :) And, Marketing at Stratchclyde is pretty good. It provides 2-semester project to solve the marketing problem for companies.

student

Qzh    2008/5/28 12:15

Is Marketing at Birmingham difficult to apply? Which one is better between Birmingham and Nottingham Trent?

student

Wood    2008/5/29 11:38

It's difficult to be accepted by Msc Marketing at Birmingham University. They have high requirements.

Marketing at Nottingham focuses on PR & Media, and also has strict requirements. Both two are quite different, so they're uncomparable

student

Joseph    2008/5/30 15:21

MSc Marketing at Birmingham is open to all, but why it's difficult to be accepted?

Strathclyde is good, too. They have MSc Marketing and MSc International Marketing. I'm not sure if the life is convenient in this university.

student

taotao    2008/6/3 13:47

Strathclyde is in the city centre of Glasgow, so it's convenient there.

What's the requirement for Birmingham?

student

Wood    2008/6/5 12:31

The requirement for Birmingham is not so high (IELTS 6.5 and 80%+), but they reject a lot...maybe it's because of the big number of their Chinese student :)

Hi everyone

Is it really true that for Warwick University Marketing MSc international students need IELTS level 8.0????

student

timo    2008/9/24 11:42

Yes its true

But the good news is it shows how popular this course is. If you can be accepted you can be assured that your fellow classmates will all be of the highest standard.

student

cinderella    2008/9/25 13:50

Thanks for your quick response to my question timo. I agree the course should be very good but worry i cannot get IELTS 6.0, anyway I will try my best

student

timo    2008/10/14 10:11

Good luck! By the way for the marketing course at Birmingham University they really look for how good your undergraduate university is. In China they look for a top 100 university

student

cinderella    2008/10/15 11:04

thanks again

Hi, Can anyone suggest me a good university for studying brand management at UK.

student

Typo    2008/10/20 19:06

Hello

I think Brunel is the only university with a masters in Brand Management

student

sagi    2008/10/21 2:43

Can anyone please tell me if Queen Mary University (London) is good for Msc International Marketing..or if QMU is a good uni at all?

student

Typo    2008/10/24 11:00

Hi sagi

Queen Mary is really good, ignore its ranking by The Times it is much better than this and British people feel it is very good university. Of course its not one of the top Business Schools so if you can be accepted by one of them you should choose them but if not QM is a great choice

student

cinderella    2008/10/30 17:38

Hi again

can anyone tell me more about the London School of Marketing? It is listed by Timo as one of the best schools in Britain for marketing but I have never heard of it b4

thanks

student

bhatsunil    2008/12/14 17:44

How is the MSc Marketing and Strategy in Cranfield SOM?

student

timo    2008/12/16 8:06

Cranfield's marketing is really high quality, sorry I should have included it in my original list but its easy to forget Cranfield as it is a graduate school only. The course requires 2 years work experience and I think that suggests what a good course it is as most marketing degrees do not require this.

student

Avaan    2009/1/12 12:48

i have 2 yrs work experience at a highly reputed firm. i am debating if i should put in another year and opt for an MBA or opt for a msc in specialised course...considering in the latter my exp would really help me??
also can someone please suggest the top 3-4 schools for msc in marketing??

student

Paulie    2009/1/23 6:49

Hi,

What about Bournemouth - MA Advertising and Marketing Communications?
Or University of the Arts - Marketing Communications?

Any other with Communications involved?

student

timo    2009/1/24 15:21

Trying using the Course Search on this website. Type Marketing Communication - there are quite a few

I would truly be grateful if someone could rank the following universities for me. And also let me know which is the most student friendly.

University of St. Andrews
Warwick
Bath
Aston
Lancaster
Durham
Cardiff
Strathclyde

Thanks a Bunch!

student

timo    2009/1/29 15:07

Warwick, Bath, Aston, Lancaster are probably the best

Cardiff, Strathclyde next

and then Durham and St Andrews

I think all universities would call themselves student friendly

student

elmazahir    2009/1/29 15:42

Thanks timo!

I sent in my applications 2 weeks ago to all of them mentioned above.
I already got in Lancaster (Msc in advanced marketing management), they made me an unconditional offer.
I am hoping the others would get back to me soon as well.
St Andrews was my first choice though, as it had a higher ranking than lancaster. I am a bit confused now ... :S

student

timo    2009/1/30 10:21

Congratulations, that's really quick so they must really like you

student

Typo    2009/1/30 10:40

St Andrews has a great overall ranking and reputation but its Marketing course is quite new (actually its business school is new) and has yet to become famous. Timo ranked according to reputation for marketing.

student

elmazahir    2009/1/30 16:32

thanks timo and typo,

that explains a lot. st. andrews got back to me today and said that i was over qualified for the marketing program they offer and advised me to apply for mib instead.

so i guess i need to make my decission from the other unis i have applied to.

out of aston, bath warwick and lancaster which has the best marketing program and better job prospects? (that is if the others get back to me :(

also did i miss out on any better unis? as in, should i have applied to other colleges i did not include in my list?

student

timo    2009/2/2 8:23

You've not missed out on any I think, those 4 are about as good as it gets. As they are all very good you should take a close look at the course details for each university to see if there is one you prefer. Also consider living environemnt, only Aston is in a city, the others are not. Studying abroad is not just about study but also the experience of living in a foreign culture and a lot of students don't give proper consideration to this factor. Aston University is famous for its great employment record but I don't think Warwick can be far behind

student

dancchica530    2009/2/2 11:00

Hello,

Wow timo, you sure have a lot of knowledge on this subject. I was wondering, what is your knowledge based off of?

I'm from the US- applying to some UK Marketing programs and I'm trying to get a sense of the acceptance rates at various schools (so I can determine which others I've got a shot at). I've recently applied to Manchester, UWE, Birmingham, and Kingston.

You mentioned that in determining acceptance, Birmingham looked for top undergraduate universities? I was wondering what led you to this conclusion.

student

timo    2009/2/3 12:57

Hi dancchica

My job is to help international students when they are applying to study in a British university. So my knowledge is not from direct experience of studying marketing but of having helped plenty of students who have (its a popular subject!).

So for Birmingham its from experience of having applied. But there is one thing in your favour - your American. Just like in the US, in the UK universities get a lot of interest from the Far East where a high educational level holds such value in society (particularly from China and India). As an American it is probable departments will be more likely to accept you as they do not need to worry about the classroom having too many Americans.

Its difiicult to say acceptance rates, of course it depends on your grades. If you have decent grades at undergraduate level you should be accepted. Some popular courses have acceptance rates of 1 in 4 but remember a lot of those applications will not have been very appropriate.

At the end of the day you've just got to give it a go

student

dancchica530    2009/2/4 14:14

wow, thanks timo!

I went to a top US university and my grades are good. Not "knock your socks off" worthy, but very respectable. I'm used to very selective schools, that want stellar grades and work experience (which I lack). I wasn't exactly sure how the UK schools compared. But, thanks to your info, I think I'll give some more very respectable schools a shot!

I'm glad I found this forum! All the information is very helpful!

student

timo    2009/2/6 8:42

Glad to help, with very respectable grades I think you are right to aim for the top schools, good luck!

What about Msc Marketing in Keele?

student

mattheyasia    2009/2/10 12:58

How's the reputation of Keele University?

student

Mike    2009/2/11 8:51

Hi mattheyasia and all guys for new questions about your case can you post them as new posts please? Thanks!

student

Faraz    2009/2/15 7:19

sure mike..but there's one question i wanted to ask dancchica regardin her last reply..wil switch to new posts then..

u were saying u r frm US n applyin for a UK masters program in marketing..may i know wht made u think to go for UK or a UK uni, when u r already in US?? As i c everyone preferring USA for higher education..

I'd also appreciate if anybody else, especially Timo can tell me abt some good things or plus points, that i can get in UK or a UK uni, but not in USA...regarding life, education, job n etc..

I'd be really greatfull to u...i must also tel u dat i'm an asian plannin to opt for masters in da field of marketing..

student

dancchica530    2009/2/15 14:49

Hello Faraz,

For me, getting a masters in the UK gives me the opportunity to live in a new environment. I enjoy the UK and it's easy access to the rest of Europe!

The US is great, the higher education is great, but not every school here is going to be "better" than what you might find in the UK (and vice versa). It depends more on which doors open up for you...

student

darkie007    2009/3/3 4:26

Timo, first I want to thank you for opening this topic. I've noticed you haven't mentioned Kingston in the top of the universties with a good marketing master. This site - http://www.careerdynamo.com/marketing_masters_rankings.html says Kingston has has one of the best marketing courses. I'm a bit confused. I know it's a pretty new university and it doesn't have the reputation of those you mentioned above but I've heard it has a very good marketing master. I wanna choose a good marketing master that's why I don't want to take a rush decision. Secondnly, I saw that every university asks for a TOEFL/IELTS certificate in order to be admitted. The thing is, I don't know If I can take my TOEFL/IELTS certificate in time to meet up the deadlines. Is there the possibiliy to be admitted and take the language test after? thank you in advance

student

Paul    2009/3/4 8:54

Hi darkie007

check the end of this question

http://www.how2uk.com/ukstudy/t/887/m ... gree-kingston-university/

I'm not saying Kingston isn't a good programme but I'm not sure that ranking can be taken too seriously.

You can take the IELTS exam after you apply, any time before the course begins

student

Mike    2009/3/19 10:21

please post new questions anew

student

dancchica530    2009/3/20 14:51

Timo,

I was wondering if you could tell me more about why these courses are generally considered the best marketing masters. Is it perhaps the faculty, overall student satisfaction, an aspect of the course structure... assignments and projects that students find especially beneficial... something else? Any specifics would be great. Thanks!

student

barkha    2009/4/28 16:03

hey guys....hows the international marketing management programme at leeds business school.

student

rawatpreeti    2009/5/2 15:47

Hey timo,

how about london metropolitian business school for masters in marketing, kings college london , westminster business school and nottingham university ...which of these is best ...or none of them plz suggest

student

sylvie    2009/5/2 20:58

hi timo,

Could you please tell me which universities you mentioned require some work experience? Thanks.

student

Typo    2009/5/4 11:49

hi, marketing degrees don't require work experience

Hi Timo!
I've been meaning to ask you for some time now, if you had to choose between Cranfield's MSc Strategic Marketing and Warwick's MSc Marketing and Strategy which one would you opt for...considering, of course, you've been offered places in both of them?

Thanks.

student

treep    2009/5/11 5:58

Hi everyone!
hope you could help.
I was offered a place in these uni for Msc in marketing:
birmingham; durham; queen mary; glasgow; cardiff; st. andrews.

I narrowed down my choice to Cardiff, Glasgow and St. Andrews.
Which one would you suggest?

thanks!
-dave

student

timo    2009/5/12 10:41

OK two quick responses but from now on can any new questions not be posted here but rather start a new question thread like Mike asked for

Dave: Discount St Andrews and choose between Cardiff & Glasgow, St Andrews business school is only a few years old.
Phipz: As an international student I would have to choose Warwick as Cranfield is not well known to employers outside of Britain

student

treep    2009/5/12 16:54

^Thank you timo for your advice! It's true st. andrews SOM is quite new, but I fear that many employers (especially outside UK) may not know that cardiff marketing course is actually better than the one in st. andrews. They look for the name, and st. andrews is much more known and renowed than cardiff. IMO You can "spend" the name of st. andrews much more than cardiff, isn't it?
cheers!

amrita    2009/5/12 18:28

Hi all,

Needed some information on the masters in marketing courses I have conditional offers from
Lancaster University: M.Sc in Advanced Marketing
Warwick Business School: M.Sc Marketing and Strategy

I have appeared for my IELTS and awaiting the results. I am positive that the scores will be sufficient to qualify for both the universities (8 for Warwick and/ or 7 for Lancaster).

My dilemma really is that I am unable to determine which of the aforementioned courses is more suitable. I understand that the marketing component at Lancaster will be more advanced than Warwick, since it’s a more streamlined course. On the other hand Warwick offers a dual specialization, Marketing and Strategy. Further, I think that to judge a course or the university only on the various rankings available is a very shallow approach.

Can somebody out there help clear this confusion and aid in making what seems to be a decision almost impossible to make!!

Thank you and looking forward to a response ASAP!!

student

treep    2009/5/12 18:51

hi amrita!
well everyone here is a bit baffled... the rankings are somewhat misleading or contraddictory... it is hard to choose, its a life-changing decision, so we'd like to have all the info!! In your case you should look on what you like the most. take a look at the courses and see which you like the most. this is my opinion of course! they're both excellent uni, so... I wouldn't know... I'm in a similar position! see the post above yours!
cheers,
dave

student

amrita    2009/5/12 23:19

Hey dave,

Thanx for the info...definately will come in handy..really wish these choices could be easier to make..i am having sleepless nights..almost..tee hee!!

thanx dude...lookin forward to hearin from the rest ..!!

Love,
Amrita

student

treep    2009/5/12 23:55

your welcome amrita! I think we should help each other, sharing our concerns and points of view. If you were in my place, what would you choose, between cardiff and st. andrews?
Here everyone is very kind and cooperative, let's hope togheter we can make the right choice!!
